The Medulla Review
MELLISSA BROWNE

Milk and Maturity

If I had a dime
for every promise that didn’t mean Shit
Every word counted on
that never equaled out
left my judgment callous
I’d build a fortress of diamonds and mirrors
a laser couldn’t cut me
The scales of justice have always been tipped
but this time out

out spilled every inch of naivety
I can’t get back
Scooping up spilt milk never serves
no one wants to drink tainted liquid from the floor
after all knowledge is power
and power kills
Now I have the ability to contemplate
every hidden motive
and it Sucks

I want naivety back
watching your back is exhausting
Soon after you realize you need
the people that once watched you
tend to you watch you less
until gradually you’re grown
and you didn’t ask for it
but it poured

sleep will you have me

i would like to be in your house
see the conditions here aren't so good
my knuckles are sore
my cheeks all frozen
consciousness is chasing me
here there are limits
limits on things that shouldn't be
in my limited life
your house has been my expansion
the life i wake up from
in cold chills and praise
it wasn't mine
the life i didn't want to leave
i am cradled in your stability
and i am shaken to knock on your door
