The Medulla Review
LEE STERN

I’m Sorry

I want you to know that I’m sorry that I ever said that you were a bitch.

I want you to know that I’m a bad judge of character

and if I called you a bitch, it just shows

that I don’t know what I’m talking about.

The fact that you tried to take my eye out with the heel of your shoe

doesn’t change my opinion in this matter one bit.

I just really don’t know what came over me,

even when you put the knife in my back

and I heard the angels

pounding splinters through the rings in my name.

By Staying Here

By staying here,

I have not exercised my right to claim the new dominion.

I have merely stayed as close to my chair

as the water stays to the air when there’s nothing to do.

By staying here,

what I think is the result of happenstance

turns out instead to be nothing more

than what I ordinarily see whenever I wake up sometimes

and realize that I’m still sleeping.

And by staying here, you see, if the leaves go away,

I can always go next door and ask Jill if she has any coffee.

By staying here, without even asking you for your benefits.

By staying here, unsubscribed,

naming roses. Unpackaged by blanketing hills.
